SOME STUDENT TESTEMONIALS

After my degree in Maynooth I worked as a Special Needs Assistant in a mainstream school for a year assisting children with special educational needs. I was then accepted onto the Doctorate in Educational Psychology programme at the University of Bristol, UK. I have just submitted my thesis and will defend it in October. I have been offered a job with the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS) in Kilkenny. What I liked most about the Department of Psychology was thequality of the lectures, the level of support and guidance from final year thesis supervisors regarding both research and career opportunities, and finally the effort on the part of many lecturers to get to know all of the students.

The teaching methods of the staff went beyond exam preparation. Their enthusiasm as they delivered lecture content instilled the value of learning as an end in itself. I admired the multidimensional structure of the course as I have developed a wide range of skills that can be applied within the field of psychology and across a number of career paths. With the continued support and encouragement of the psychology staff in NUI Maynooth, I am currently pursuing an MSc in Social Cognition in University College London.

I arrived in Maynooth in 2000 to study for a BA, choosing Psychology as one of my three subjects. I quickly realised what a lucky choice I had made – the department was staffed by helpful, friendly people, who seemed determined to transfer their expertise and enthusiasm to us. We were expected to be excellent, and were given all the help we needed to reach that goal – something I had not experienced in formal education to that point. When I was offered the opportunity to return to study for a PhD in 2005 I was thrilled and spent a fantastic three years studying and working in the Department. After graduating with my PhD in 2008, I was offered  a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the University in Lincoln where I now hold a permanent post as a lecturer. While I now work primarily in Computer Science, my experience at Maynooth has given me all of the skills necessary to make a career in both research and teaching.

As a mature student I was very anxious about returning to study but I received so much support from the tutors, lecturers and administrative  staff in the department.  The broad range of topics covered both in lecturers and by invited guest speakers really opened my eyes to the many career areas within psychology that I had never considered.  One year after graduation and I am still receiving support from my thesis supervisor as I publish my undergraduate research as a scientific research paper in a journal of Psychology.

My time studying psychology at Maynooth will be remembered very fondly. It was fun, frenzied, very challenging but also very rewarding. The course was packed with up-to-date research-based material, attributable no doubt to the strong research focus in the department. The lecturers are the department’s biggest asset, and are amongst the most helpful and inspiring you are likely to find anywhere.  Since receiving my undergraduate degree in psychology I have gone on to complete a PhD in Psychology.

After completing my Leaving Certificate in 2001, I began to study Arts in NUI Maynooth which I chose because it offered me the chance to study both Psychology and Anthropology. By the end of my first year, I knew that Psychology was the way to go!  After spending three happy years rounding up friends for experiments (that involved getting my hand stuck in ice-water!), I graduated with First Class Honours. At that time,  I took a break from academia and worked as a legal secretary for a few years. Now however, I am jetting off to New York to pursue a Master’s Degree in Forensic Psychology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Manhattan.
